WHOIS is where information on a domain is kept and found.

The WHOIS record contains:

  • The Registrar, who can change the domain records can be changed, for example contact information, and name servers (examples: GoDaddy, NameCheap Tocows)
  • The Registrant, who owns the domain name
  • Contact info for registrant, admin and tech (often use to authorize someone has authority to make changes related to the domain)
  • Name servers for the domain, the name servers pointed to in this record are where changes to the DNS records are set (A, CNAME, MX...)
  • Dates for registration and expiration
